Sri Lanka Day 2: Polonnaruwa (The Quadrangle)

The other main area of Polonnaruwa is the Quadrangle, which is known as Dalada Maluwa ("Terrace of the Tooth Relic:") where the tooth relic was once housed here.

There is a temple made of stone and with roof intact.

It is not a big temple but it houses a few buddha statues.

The key attraction of the quadrange would be the vatadage where the outermost terrace is 18 metres in diametre.

Look out for the beautifully carved guardstones.

There were four entrances to the dagoba, and there were 4 statues of buddha at each entrance.

Not far away is the Galpota, or the Stone Book, the largest stone inscription discovered.  It was transported from Mihintale.

The Stone Book describes the deeds of King Nissankamalla.

Next to it is the Satmahal Prasada, a temple similar to Thai architecture.
